The Significance of the Cambridge School for Contemporary Political Theory

The Cambridge School, which emerged at the University of Cambridge in the 1950s and 1960s, represents a hermeneutic paradigm within intellectual history and the history of political thought. It rejects both the notion of a philosophia perennis, suggesting the continuity of fundamental questions in the relation between human beings and the world, and metaphysical claims to timeless and universal truths. Yet, Cambridge contextualism does not reduce ideas to mere epiphenomena or treat them simply as a “superstructure” of social and political processes. Rather, it acknowledges their inherent reality and capacity to influence political action, while insisting that their formation and dissemination are inseparably tied to their discursive and intellectual contexts. In this way, the approach seeks to avoid anachronism, whether by retroactively imposing modern concepts onto earlier periods or by equating past political notions with contemporary categories.

Two interconnected questions emerge from this perspective. The first concerns whether the Cambridge School’s contextualist framework can offer a normative grounding for defending democratic values, particularly in an age marked by declining trust, social fragmentation, and the destabilization of civic cohesion. The second addresses the scope of the concept of “context” itself: how broadly it must be construed to provide meaningful insight without becoming indeterminate. Both questions are pivotal not only for understanding the original ambitions of the Cambridge School but also for assessing its potential to navigate the pressing political challenges of the twenty-first century. The conference will explore these issues with the goal of demonstrating how the analytical tools of Cambridge contextualism may help interpret, critique, and ultimately respond to the contemporary crises threatening democratic life.
