Dr. Charlotte Unruh (Southampton): “Automation and Meaningfulness”

Abstract: According to Danaher and Nyholm (2021), achievement gaps – where automation replaces tasks that constitute achievements – threaten workers’ access to meaningful work. I propose a novel view on the relationship between achievement and meaningfulness, arguing that the meaningfulness of an achievement depends on the extent to which the agent cares about the achievement. I show how this view helps us understand the significance of achievement gaps, concluding that achievement gaps are less likely to threaten meaningful work than it might seem. I end with a brief reflection on the methods used in this, and similar, work.
