        • Call for Papers: Institut für Philosophie und Soziologie der Polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Verbindung mit der Helmuth Plessner Gesellschaft lädt Referenten ein, einen Vortrag auf der Tagung zu halten: PHILOSOPHISCHE ANTHROPOLOGIE ZWISCHEN SOZIOLOGIE UND GESCHICHTSPHILOSOPHIE Warschau, 8.-9. Juni 2012 Sowohl die soziale als auch die historische Natur des Menschen wurde im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert seitens der Klassiker der philosophischen Anthropologie zum Thema einer eingehenden Untersuchung. Insbesondere zu der Soziologie als einer neu etablierten Wissenschaft vom Menschen in seinen gesellschaftlichen Bezügen stand die philosophische Anthropologie von vornherein in einer engen, reziproken Beziehung. In Anknüpfung an Max Schelers und Helmuth Plessners anthropologischen Deutungen des sozialen Daseins des Menschen befasst sich auch die gegenwärtige philosophische Anthropologie mit den Problemen der Personalität und der sozialen Rolle (Grenzen der Gemeinschaft), stellt sie die Frage nach der Kondition des Menschen in der modernen Gesellschaft (unter Berücksichtigung z.B. der sozialen und anthropologischen Konsequenzen der Gentechnologie), nimmt sie die Institutionenlehre Arnold Gehlens auf und erforscht die zusammengesetzte Funktion der modernen Institutionen als sozialen Formen usw. Tagungssprache ist Deutsch; vorgesehen sind ungefähr 12 Vorträge. Die Polnische Akademie und die HPG übernehmen gemeinsam die Kosten für Reise, Unterkunft und Verpflegung. Stanis?aw Czerniak, Andrzej Gniazdowski, Zdzislaw Krasnodebski werden für die Polnische Akademie, Matthias Schloßberger, Mikhail Khorkov und Gregor Fitzi die Tagungsverantwortung für die HPG übernehmen.         • Call for Papers Axiomatic versus Semantic Truth Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP), LMU, Munich Wednesday 14th to Friday 16th March, 2012 Invited speakers: Jc Beall (University of Connecticut and University of Otago) Andrea Cantini (University of Florence) Michael Glanzberg (Northwestern University) Volker Halbach (University of Oxford) Leon Horsten (University of Bristol) Luca Incurvati (University of Cambridge) Jeffrey Ketland (University of Edinburgh and LMU, Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy) Hannes Leitgeb (LMU, Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy) Stewart Shapiro (Ohio State University and University of St Andrews) The conference's topic is the comparison between the two main approaches to truth: axiomatic and semantic. Why go one way rather than the other? Do the two approaches exclude each other? Are there alternative approaches? In which categories fall the most important existing theories? Is there a deeper metaphysical distinction underlying the two approaches? Can revenge arguments give grounds for preferring one approach over another? Can philosophical reflection on other disciplines, such as logic and set-theory, help us understanding the nature, and the philosophical import, of the semantic/axiomatic divide? We invite submissions for 35-40-minute presentations (with 25-20 additional minutes for discussion). Submissions should take the form of either a 1500 word abstract or a full paper of no more than 5000 words, with a 150-200 word abstract.         • Call for Papers: Security, Ethics, and Justice: Towards a more inclusive Security Design. 21.-23. Juni 2012, Tübingen. Das Internationale Zentrum für Ethik in den Wissenschaften (IZEW) ist ein interdisziplinäres Forschungszentrum für Fragen, die sich in und aus den Wissenschaften ergeben. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts Körperscanner: Reflexion der Ethik auf Technik und Anwendungskontexte (KRETA) werden am IZEW Entwicklung, Einführung und Nutzung von Körperscannern aus ethischer und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive analysiert. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf den Auswirkungen, die der Einsatz dieser Technologie am Flughafen auf Personen mit abweichenden Körpermerkmalen wie beispielsweise verdeckten Behinderungen haben könnte. Zudem werden auch Probleme mit Körperscannern untersucht, die sich aus religiösen oder anderen Gründen ergeben können. Die Tagung ist öffentlich, Tagungssprache ist Englisch. Eine Konferenzgebühr wird nicht erhoben. Angesprochen sind Wissenschaftler(innen) aus dem Bereich der Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften (Ethik, Philosophie, Politikwissenschaft und politische Theorie, Soziologie, Psychologie, Rechtswissenschaft), die Interesse daran haben, einen Beitrag zur Tagung zu leisten.         • Call for Submissions: International Conference on Biomedical Ontologies (ICBO 2012) co-located with the 7th International Conference on Formal Ontologies in Information Systems (FOIS 2012) 22-25 July 2012; Graz, Austria. Ontologies are increasingly used in the semantic description of biological and medical data from creation to publication and consumption by semantically enabled applications. To be effective, such ontologies must be of high quality and work well together. Therefore, issues like techniques for ontology use, good ontology design, ontology maintenance, and ontology coordination need to be addressed. The International Conference on Biomedical Ontology (ICBO) series is designed to meet this need. ICBO 2012, the third event in the highly successful series, will bring together representatives of all major communities involved in ontology use and development in biomedical research, health care, and related areas. ICBO 2012 is soliciting submissions of novel (not previously published nor concurrently submitted) research papers in the areas of the application of ontologies to biomedical problems, ontology design and ontology interoperability, at any stage in the process of data creation to its use in applications. Submissions will be welcome from a broad range of approaches to ontology building and use. In particular, we would like to invite contributions on these aspects of biomedical ontologies, as well as on the use of such ontologies in knowledge management, knowledge discovery and next-generation publishing. We will accept full-length papers (5 pages), poster submissions (1 page abstracts), software demonstrations (2 page abstracts or 5 page full application papers), and early career researcher symposium submissions (2 page abstracts). We are also looking for submissions of half-day or full-day workshops and tutorials. Workshops should be working sessions with a specific outcome t hat can be subsequently presented at the main conference. Tutorials are educational events and may involve hands-on practicals.         • Call for Papers:  International Conference  ISLAM AND INTERNATIONAL LAW14 - 15 June 2012 University of Innsbruck, Austria. The relationship between Islam and international law has been subject to controversial discussion during the last decades. Since the beginning of the millennium, it has attracted the interest of an increasing number of scholars and will certainly rise in significance in the years to come. While there are those who acknowledge Islam's contributions to the development of international law, others emphasize tensions between certain precepts of Islam as a religious order with a distinct body of norms (Shari'a) and paramount principles and guarantees of modern international law. Unfortunately, the pertinent discourse often suffers from prejudice, biases and parochialism. Hence, a diligent scientific exploration of the relevant issues is essential. The international conference hosted by the University of Innsbruck in spring 2012 seeks to address the multifaceted relations between Islam and international law in an interdisciplinary manner and from a variety of perspectives, not least due to Islam's variety itself. We therefore invite researchers and scholars (both senior and junior) in particular from the fields of international law, Islamic sciences, history, philosophy, political science and international relations to contribute to this conference. Apart from the "usual suspects" we specifically encourage to raise issues going beyond mainstream analysis. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to: 1.         • Call for Papers:  Democracy, Legality, and Policy.  Tilburg University, The Netherlands 31 May - 1 June 2012 This conference brings together experts from political philosophy, legal philosophy and social epistemology to examine fundamental issues in the theory of democracy. Is there an internal connection between the value of democracy within a group of enquirers and the "objective" standing of the products of that inquiry? How is the ideal of democratic self-governance connected to the pluralism of moral values? What is the relationship between the normative authority of democracy and of a legal system? How might the emergence of a trans-national legal order alter how we think about constitutional ideas? In what way can formal methods give insight into practical policy issues?         • Call for Papers: Ninth Annual Formal Epistemology Workshop (FEW 2012) We are happy to announce that the Ninth Annual Formal Epistemology Workshop (FEW 2012) will be held at LMU Munich, May 29 - June 1, 2012. This year's meeting is sponsored by the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. The meeting will take place at the Schloss Nymphenburg. Confirmed invited speakers include: David Christensen, Igor Douven, Sarah Moss, Eric Pacuit, Rohit Parikh, Jeff Paris, Paul Pedersen, Wlodek Rabinowicz, Charlotte Werndl, and Robbie Williams.         • Call for Papers: CRITICAL MATTER Third International Graduate Conference, Frankfurt am Main 31st May - 2nd June 2012 Matter everywhere! We breathe, eat and die... Things surround and affect us until it becomes unclear who ?we? are and what ?we? can become. The question of materiality imposes itself. Accordingly, materialities and materialisms gain popularity in social and cultural studies. Recently, scholars of diverse disciplines have increasingly stressed the importance of posing questions concerning the social life of things; the materiality of affects, emotions and the psyche; the material preconditions of the production of knowledge, the independent existence of epistemic things; the materiality of signifiers, signs and media, communication and information; the performative production of materiality in the arts and in literature; vitality and materiality of life in the age of biotechnology; the potentiality of bodies beyond anthropocentrism; the materiality of space; new materialist ontology; lastly, Marx-based historical materialism and new materialist approaches to the economy testify their relevancy in times of never-ending crisis and social distortions. These approaches have one thing in common. They no longer refer to matter as a passive carrier of meaning or human manipulation. The world of the material is not considered as a sphere of linear causality anobstinacy and contingency of matter. This call for papers addresses graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty members. We explicitly invite you to also submit work-in-progress or cooperative works. Furthermore, we will be happy to accept artistic contributions, lecture performances and artistic undertakings. The conference language is English. Abstracts should not exceed the maximum of 300 words. Deadline for submission of abstracts is January 15th 2012. Candidates will be informed by March 1st 2012 whether their paper has been accepted for the conference. The elaborated lectures should not exceed a 20 minutes time-frame. They will be presented within the three days of the conference in parallel panels. The panels are explicitly planned as discussion forums; subsequent to each lecture 20 minutes time for discussion is designated.         • Call for papers: Vom 23. bis zum 25 Februar 2012 wird die Tagung des internationalen Forschungsnetzwerks »Transzendentalphilosophie/Deutscher Idealismus« in Berlin stattfinden. Der Titel der Tagung lautet: Zweck und Zweckmäßigkeit. Teleologie nach Kants Kritik Ziel der Tagung ist es, ausgehend vom »Reich der Zwecke« in der Philosophie Kants Raum für Reflexionen über das teleologische Denken überhaupt zu bieten.         • Call for Papers: Graduiertentagung für Philosophie Frei sein, frei handeln - Freiheit zwischen theoretischer und praktischer Philosophie 20.-21. April 2012, Liefmannhaus, Universität Freiburg  Wenn Freiheit heute als physiologische Eigenschaft des Menschen verstanden werden und ihm als solche abgesprochen werden kann, dann trivialisiert ein solches Verständnis die Geschichte des Begriffs. Freiheit ist in der Philosophie immer in weit ausgreifenden Zusammenhängen diskutiert worden: Wenn Freiheit etwa darin besteht, in der kausal determinierten Natur spontan handeln zu können, dann ergibt sich ein solches Verständnis von menschlicher Freiheit erst aus metaphysischen Annahmen. Gleiches gilt für die Ansätze, Freiheit als etwas zu interpretieren, das sich in der Geschichte verwirklicht, als etwas, das nur durch Gnade möglich ist, oder als etwas, das in der Auseinandersetzung mit herrschenden Welt- und Selbstverständnissen gewonnen werden muss. Der Begriff der Freiheit bildet so aber nicht nur ein Thema der praktischen, sondern auch der theoretischen Philosophie und ist vielleicht nur in der spannungsvollen Verbindung beider wirklich zu erfassen. Zu diesem Zweck wird sowohl um systematische als auch philosophiegeschichtliche Beiträge gebeten. Für jedes Referat mit anschließender Diskussion stehen insgesamt 45 Minuten zur Verfügung. Die Arbeitssprachen der Nachwuchstagung sind Deutsch und Englisch. Vorträge können in jeder dieser Sprachen gehalten werden. Eine Veröffentlichung der Tagungsbeiträge im Verlag Alber ist geplant. Im Rahmen der Tagung halten prominente Forscher Abendvorträge. Sprechen werden u. a. Volker Gerhardt, Dietmar Köhler und Morten Thaning.. Angebote für Beiträge zur Nachwuchstagung können bis zum 31.         • CALL FOR PAPERS: Marx and the Aesthetic (University of Amsterdam, May 10-13th, 2012) The aim of this conference is twofold: on the one hand, to analyse the role of the aesthetic in the writings of Marx and, on the other, to examine works of art and literature which are based on, or have been directly inspired by, Marx?s writings. At the core of this conference, then, is an attempt to think the immanent relation between the aesthetic and emancipatory conceptions of politics. Previous attempts to make sense of Marx and Engels in terms of aesthetics have either been Marxist in a very broad sense ? writing as productive force, aesthetic autonomy as critique of the commodity form, the critique of aesthetic ideologies etc. - or Marxological in a naïve sense i.e., merely assembling in one volume the stray comments on art and literature that pepper Marx's and Engels' writings. The problem with the first attempt is that it simply assumes that there is a prominent lacuna with respect to the aesthetic in Marx himself and that, therefore, Marxian grammar and vocabulary were in need of radical transformation. The failure of the second approach (although these attempts call for reconsideration in their own right, since they are now all about 40 years old) was that it restricted the understanding of "aesthetics" to statements dealing explicitly with art and literature.? Recent debates concerning the aesthetic (to be distinguished from aesthetics as a discipline), however, have allowed for a different understanding of the field. The aesthetic crosses disciplinary boundaries and cannot be restricted to specific subjects. The aesthetic is a form of thought in which a whole host of complex and interrelated issues are at stake: the orders of mind and matter, the disruptive dynamics of sense perception, expression and of metaphor, the logics of innovation and of the event, the indeterminate character of semiotic systems and so on. Aesthetics cannot, therefore, be restricted to art alone and does not even necessarily coincide with it. In other words, the aesthetic is in a constant state of ?migration.? Authors like Nancy, Lacoue-Labarthe and Rancière, among others, have pointed out the way in which all radical attempts to theorize the political are profoundly dependent on figures of the aesthetic. The "aesthetico-political" has become a name for all aesthetic dynamics that cross (and confound) the hegemonic orders of reason and the established channels of perception. Was sollen wir tun? Universität Konstanz, 17. - 20.09.2012 In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fachbereich Philosophie der Universität Konstanz veranstaltet die Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie e.V. (GAP) ihren achten Internationalen Kongress "Was dürfen wir glauben? Was sollen wir tun?" ("What may we believe? What ought we to do?") vom 17.-20.09.2012 an der Universität Konstanz.Wie auf den bisherigen Kongressen wird es auch acht Sektionen geben, die dem umfassenden Austausch über alle Themen der Analytischen Philosophie dienen. Die GAP lädt alle Interessierten ein, für die Sektionen von GAP.8 Beiträge einzureichen. Eine Neuerung ist, dass in den Sektionen sowohl Vorträge als auch Poster eingereicht werden können. Die Einreichungen können in deutscher oder in englischer Sprache gehalten sein. Vorträge sollen maximal 25 Minuten lang sein; danach sind 10 Minuten Zeit zur Diskussion vorgesehen. Poster werden im DIN A0-Format ausgestellt. Vorträge und Poster sind unabhängig und können unabhängig eingereicht werden. Falls mehr eingereichte Vorträge akzeptabel sind als in den Sektionen Zeit vorhanden ist, behalten wir uns vor, stattdessen eine Beteiligung an den Poster-Sessions vorzuschlagen. Die Universität Konstanz hat einen Best-Paper-Award und einen Best-Poster-Award zu je 500 Euro ausgeschrieben.         • Call for Papers: The World Medical Association is pleased to invite proposals for papers for presentation at the satellite meeting Thinking ahead ? The Future of the Declaration of Helsinki Rotterdam, 26/6/2012, The Manhattan Hotel. The Declaration of Helsinki is one of the most important international ethical regulations of biomedical research. It has been revised several times since its adoption in Helsinki in 1964. As a ?living document?, it is continuously adapted to new developments and challenges in biomedical research. In 2011, the General Assembly of the World Medical Association decided to start a new process of revision. The WMA hence invites experts to share their views on the possible need for a revision of the Declaration of Helsinki at this satellite symposium. The WMA thereby wants to closely involve the bioethical science community in the ongoing discussion process of this upcoming revision. The conference organizers welcome submissions from different disciplines, including ethics/philosophy, theology, the social sciences, law, public health, medicine and others. We particularly encourage submissions from early career researchers. In their abstracts, applicants are encouraged to refer to certain paragraphs of the Declaration of Helsinki and to their respective wording in the 2008 version (revised in Seoul).         • Call for Papers: Seventh International Conference on Formal Ontologies in Information Systems (FOIS 2012) July, 24-27, 2012 in Graz, Austria  held together with the Third International Conference on Biomedical Ontology (ICBO 2012) DEFINITION AND SCOPE Ontology, originally a fundamental part of philosophical enquiry, is concerned with the analysis and categorization of what exists. In recent years, however, a complementary focus of ontological inquiry gained significant momentum fueled by the advent of complex information systems which rely on robust and coherent representations of their subject matter. The systematic study of such representations, their reasoning techniques and their relations to reality, are at the center of the modern discipline of formal ontology. Formal ontology in this modern sense is now a research focus in such diverse domains as conceptual modeling, database design, software engineering, organizational modeling, artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, the life sciences, bioinformatics, geographic information science, knowledge engineering, information retrieval, and the semantic web.         • Call for Papers: Politische Theorie und das Denken Martin Heideggers: (Un-)Möglichkeiten einer systematischen Anknüpfung. Im Rahmen des - vornehmlich an Doktorand_innen und Post-Docs gerichteten - Workshops soll ausgelotet werden, ob und inwiefern in systematischer Hinsicht von Seiten der politischen Theorie an das Heideggersche Denken angeknüpft wurde bzw. werden kann. Mithin soll erkundet werden, welche Bedeutung Heidegger für die gegenwärtige politische Philosophie hat bzw. inwiefern das heideggersche Denken helfen könnte, zeitgenössische Fragen und Probleme der politischen Philosophie zu klären oder zu einer Neufassung politischer Grundkategorien beitragen könnte. Unter dieser Prämisse besteht die Möglichkeit, Beiträge in ca. 15- bis 20-minütigen Vorträgen zur Debatte zu stellen. Denkbar sind Themenvorschläge aus Bereichen der politischen Theorie im engeren (z.B. Demokratietheorien etc.), aber auch im weiteren (z.B.         • Call for Papers: ECREA 2012 - 4th European Communication Conference, Istanbul, Turkey, 24-27 October 2012. Abstracts are welcome from all areas and traditions of philosophy. The general theme of the conference is ‘Social Media-Global Voices’. We are looking for contributions in media and communication philosophy, ethics, philosophy of culture, political philosophy, but also philosophy of language and information, semiotics, epistemoloy, the history of philosophy and other fields. ECREA is pleased to accept proposals for individual papers, panels as well as poster presentations. All proposals must be submitted through the conference website www.ecrea2012istanbul.eu. Abstracts should be written in English and contain a clear outline of the argument, the theoretical framework, and, where applicable, methodology and results. The preferred length of the individual abstracts is between 400 and 500 words (the maximum is 500 words). Panel proposals --which should consist of five individual contributions--, combine a panel abstract with five individual abstracts, each of which are between 400 and 500 words. Participants may submit more than one proposal, but only one paper or poster by the same first author might be accepted.         • Call for papers: Workshop "Koexistenz rivalisierender Paradigmen", 29. Juni 2012, Universität Oldenburg. Vor genau 50 Jahren führte Thomas S. Kuhn mit The Structure of Scientific Revolutions seine Paradigmenkonzeption in die Wissenschaftsphilosophie ein. Nach Kuhns Auffassung ist in einer wissenschaftlichen Disziplin, die einen bestimmten Grad der Reife erreicht hat, stets genau ein Paradigma vorherrschend, welches die normalwissenschaftliche Entwicklung bestimmt und im Falle einer wissenschaftlichen Revolution durch genau ein Paradigma abgelöst wird. In diesem Workshop sollen von Kuhn nicht intendierte Konstellationen untersucht werden, in denen mehrere Paradigmen über einen langen Zeitraum parallel existieren und unterschiedliche, sich z.T. widersprechende Erklärungsmuster für dieselben Gegenstandsbereiche bereitstellen, ohne dass eines der Paradigmen durch ein anderes verdrängt wird. Darunter fehlt es natürlich nicht an Untersuchungen, die sich insbesondere auf Heideggers Interpretation von Platon beziehen. Untersuchungen zur Heideggers Interpretation des platonischen Sophistes haben sich allerdings eher auf die Rekonstruktion von Heideggers hermeneutischen Voraussetzungen als auf die Überprüfung der Validität seiner Interpretation für die heutige Platonforschung konzentriert und damit den Vorwurf des deutschen Philosophen Werner Beierwaltes, Heideggers Platondeutung sei philologisch nicht unanfechtbar, indirekt bestätigt. Deshalb setzt sich die vom Seminar für Klassische Philologie (Gräzistik) der Philipps-Universität Marburg und vom Institut für Klassische Philologie und Philosophie der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg (Lehrstuhl für Philosophie I) organisierte interdisziplinäre Tagung eine punktuelle Auseinandersetzung mit dem platonischen Text und mit Heideggers Marburger Vorlesung zum Ziel. Die Tagung wird in Marburg vom 10. bis 12. April 2013 stattfinden und richtet sich in erster Linie an Nachwuchswissenschaftler der Philosophie und der Klassischen Philologie, wobei ausgewiesene Forscher sowie Interessenten und Interessentinnen aus anderen Disziplinen willkommen sind. Geplant sind etwa 10/15 Beiträge. Interessenten werden darum gebeten, einen Vortragsvorschlag von max. 400 Wörtern in deutscher bzw. englischer Sprache und ein kurzes CV bis zum 30. April 2012 an Diego De Brasi (debrasi@staff.uni-marburg.de) zu senden. Die Publikation der Beiträge ist vorgesehen. Die Organisatoren bemühen sich, eine Finanzierung für die Übernahme von Reise- und Übernachtungskosten zu erhalten.

          Call for Papers: SOPHISTES: Plato’s Dialogue and Heidegger’s Lecture in Marburg (1924/25). Scientific papers devoted to Martin Heidegger’s relation to ancient philosophy are periodically published. Among them, several contributions concentrate on Heidegger’s interpretation of Plato. Interestingly, attempts to analyze his lecture on Plato’s Sophistes have rather focused on the reconstruction of his hermeneutic premises than on the examination of its validity for the modern research on Plato. Thus the criticism of the German philosopher Werner Beierwaltes, who claims that Heidegger’s interpretation of Plato is philologically disputable, has been indirectly confirmed. The interdisciplinary conference organized by the seminar for classical philology (Greek) of the Philipps-University of Marburg and the institute for classical philology and philosophy of the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg (1st Chair of Philosophy) aims at a careful analysis of the Platonic text and of Heidegger’s lecture. The conference will take place in Marburg from 10th to 12th April 2013 and is directed, primarily, at up-and-coming researchers in philosophy and classical philology. However, established as well as interested researchers from other disciplines are also welcome. About 10/15 papers are planned. Interested researchers should send a talk proposal of max. 400 words in German or English and a short CV to Diego De Brasi (debrasi@staff.uni-marburg.de) until 30th April 2012. Als im Jahre 2000 die regelmässigen Weltkongresse der Metaphysik begannen, beobachteten wir ein konstantes Interesse von Seiten Vertreter verschiedener Disziplinen, die wichtigsten Fragen hinsichtlich des menschlichen Denkens zu behandeln; in vielen Fällen wurden zu diesem Thema neue Fragen aufgeworfen. Die Metaphysik beschäftigt sich mit der absoluten oder letzten Wirklichkeit in Beziehung mit allem was existiert. Die Entwicklung der Wissenschaft und der Technik, der wachsende Prozess der Globalisierung, rücken das metaphysische Interesse immer mehr in den Vordergrund, um eine passende Integration der verschiedenen Kosmovisionen zu ermöglichen, die in dieser Welt immer enger zusammen leben; andererseits können dadurch einige ?chronischen" Gegensätze überwunden werden, die das Verständnis des Menschen erschweren. Unserer Meinung nach nimmt der Gegensatz zwischen einer materialistischen Ideologie reduktiver Art und dem ?Durst nach dem Unendlichen", der sich in allen Religionen, Kulturen und Sensibilitäten offenbart, in denen mit neuer Kraft die Werte hervortreten die offen sind zum Transzendenten.         • Workshop announcement & call for posters: Animal Cognition: Behavioral Studies and Theory Formation. June 28-30, 2012 Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany). We invited poster presentation as part of our symposium and will financially support the presenters. Posters should be submitted in a completed format or to be described by an abstract of 700 words. We intend to structure the presentations and discussions by focusing on four interconnected key questions: 1. What methodological principles should govern investigation of animal cognition and interpretation of observations of animal behavior? 2. How can recent findings about cognition in corvids and primates be integrated with neuroscientific data on brain evolution into theories of cognitive evolution and views about an anthropological borderline between humans and animals? 3. To what extent can we find symbolic understanding in animals? Since understanding symbolic and a recursive structure is one of the recent candidates for an anthropological borderline, one question for discussion is whether this still marks a clear species difference. 4. Empirical work has steadily accumulated suggesting the paradigm examples of 'merely associative' behaviors have striking ties to attention and central control, leading some to argue that these behaviors are better explained by appeal to cognition. This raises a question: Does a purely associative link-forming mechanism exist at all, or is learning cognitive all the way down in both humans and animals?
